Tell Me a Story—Della Clason Sperling, founder of Sperling Arts New York, enjoyed selecting the Best-of-the-Rest calendar for March 2012. As she was going through the artworks, she mentioned that she prefers to see more than one artwork from each artist as it gives her a choice and more of a feel for what the artist is doing. She also mentioned her passion for narrative:
“I like it when they [add detail]—if the artist gives you something, it’s like a prize. You say, ‘So that’s what it’s all about!’”
Two artworks are retiring, each having been in three calendars: Bridget_L_10-11-09--3AE, a pinhole photography digital print by Dan McCormack (NY), and The Egyptian Girl, an oil by Bruce Erikson (OH). One artist, Frank Lally (RI), is making his calendar debut with his expressive charcoal drawing Erica.
Ms. Sperling chose Sybil by David Schulz (CT) to start the month. She called David Morrow’s Portrait of the Artist, “kind of wonderful.”
The 31 artists represented in March, 2012, in day order are:
1 David Schulz, 2 David Schulz, 3 A. Galban, 4 William Thierfelder, 5 Frank Lally, 6 Jean Marcellino, 7 David Morrow, 8 Jon Rettich, 9 Taehyub Lee, 10 Donelli J. The Barebrush Provenance for each artwork is viewable by clicking on the calendar thumbnail (above) or on the caption under the artwork from each artist’s Barebrush Gallery page. The Barebrush program of retiring artworks that have been selected for three calendars is designed to encourage all artists to show their best new work and keep their online galleries fresh and interesting.
