Happy 10th Anniversary to Barebrush -- Guest curator, James Patrick Reid, is a New York City-based artist and teacher. He is a member of the Painting Center gallery in Manhattan, where he will have an exhibition of his recent paintings this November 1 through 26.

When asked what he looks for in art, Mr. Reid answered:

There is a quality which characterizes the great art of all epochs and styles, from the Chauvet caves to Mondrian. It is vital form, form that lives thanks to the integrity and completeness of its relationships of line, shape, and tone, and by virtue of the resonance of the volumes and the space. Great abstract art aims directly at this quality, and the masterpieces of representational art from antiquity to the present time impressively embody it. This is the standard by which I judge art.

Mr. Reid selected three Curators' Choice nominees for September, (starred dates in the list): 1* Thames (oil) by Marie-Paule Martin of New York City, NY; 14* WATTS SPRAWLED A616 (color pencil) by Jon Rettich of New York, NY; 19* Marianne (graphite) by Mateus Costa of Cheltenham, PA.
