Skill and Today’s Attitude — Ed Brennan, former Chairman, former President and resident artist member of the Salmagundi Club selected over 60 artworks on the first pass through the “Curator’s Lighbox,” the electronic program which showcases the art for selection into the Barebrush N*des-of-the-Month. The prospect was daunting — only 28 artworks would make the final cut.

There was a lot of strong art. Brennan and Barebrush CEO, Ilene Skeen, talked about the final selections and the “also-rans.” Skeen’s conclusion was that the cachet, discipline and work requirements of running a monthly contest necessitate that only the finally accepted winners can be officially recognized.

In all, 15 artworks are new to the calendars, including two artists making their calendar debut, Elizabeth Sowell-Zak and Christian Beels. Five artworks in February 2011 have been in three calandars and will now be officially “retired” from competition.

What can be said about the selection process, however, is that Brennan looked for three things: obvious artistic skill, a simple message well-conveyed, and today’s attitude. This is especially evident in Brennan’s Curators’ Choice nominees: Ethiopian Goddess by Angelique Moselle Price (Feb 19), “definitely today”; Perfectly Naked #7 by Christopher Smith (Feb 15), “relaxed and alert, well-done”; Dune 4743 by Joseph Mays (Feb 6), “interesting and elegant”; A Year Begins by Robin Kappy (Feb 5), “beautiful exhaustion.” Brennan selected Angel Seated by Elizabeth Sowell-Zak (Feb 1) as “a great starter for the month.”

The 28 artists represented in February, 2011, in day order are: 1* Elizabeth Sowell-Zak, 2 Janet A. Cook, 3 Bill Teitsworth, NWS, 4 EKM, 5* Robin Kappy, 6* Joseph Mays, 7 Lucinda Luvaas, 8 Christian Beels, 9 Donna Cleary, 10 Matthew Smith, 11 Bill Foote, 12 Jean Marcellino, 13 Sandro La Ferla, 14 Robert Nizamov, 15* Christopher Smith, 16 Dan McCormack, 17 Stephanie Fuller, 18 Emily Stedman, 19* Angelique Moselle Price, 20 Tai Lin, 21 Eddie Torres, 22 Tony Lee, 23 Kathy Ostman-Magnusen, 24 BEN RIVIERE-NAZARENO, 25 Guenter Knop, 26 Tim Brian McSweeney, 27 Anthony Gordon, 28 Ilene Skeen.

Each of the artists selected for the calendar receives two (2) complimentary listings. Five artists, indicated by asterisks (*), are nominated for the Curators Choice Awards. Curators’ Choice nominees receive 8 additional complimentary listings. The top three artists receive additional prizes. You can also vote for “My Favorite N*de,” the poll which includes all of the art in the calendar. The top three artists in “My Favorite N*de” receive one (1) complementary listing. Winners announced March 1st.
