Nude Humans Being Human—True to his interest and intent, guest curator, Robert Curcio, writer, art dealer and art enterpreneur, selected a wide variety of materials, techniques and attitudes for the Barebrush April 2011 N*des-of-the-Month calendar. He showed a distinct interest in the fluidity and ambiguity of watercolor, selecting three as Curators’ Choice nominees. Untitled (Raised Knees, on Back) by Guillermo Velasco has the honor of opening the month. Curcio enjoyed the idea that as the artist struggled to pull the figure out of the puddle, the viewer is similarly challenged and has to work to see it, to put it together. Curcio chose Ryan Dissolving by Barebrush Featured Artist Jacqui Morgan, saying generally that Morgan’s work is “masterful and accomplished.”
Curcio also liked the handling, effect and allusion of the watercolor, Honey Bee Reenacted with Bunny Slippers by Gretchen Mahnkopf. Another Curators' Choice selection was the oil painting, The Sicilian Expedition by Daniel Maidman. Curcio praised Maidman’s skill, technique, but especially expressed interest in Maidman’s work with contemporary myths. Finally, he noted his special interest in pin-hole photography. He thought that Ithaca_J_8-15-09--11AB by Barebrush Featured Artist Dan McCormack “excellent” because of its compositional use of the two mirrors and the fact that it is saying something more without being obvious, trite or contrived.
Two artists are making their calendar debut, Guillermo Velasco, mentioned above, of Newton, Massachusetts, and Paul Rybarczyk of Buffalo, New York. Five artworks are “retiring,” having been selected for the third time to appear in a Barebrush calendar. Among them are works by Barebrush Featured Artists, Jacqui Morgan with Ryan Dissolving, Emily Steadman with Woman By Window and Primal Block Party, All 4 by Kathy Ostman-Magnusen. Also retiring are artworks by Donna Cleary and David Michael Hollander. Seventeen pieces are new to the calendars entirely. Overall, Curcio made many comments as he reviewed the art. Where possible, comments are relayed to the artist.
