Nudes Male: Relax, Guys, It's Still Summer†—Barebrush guest curator Vaughn Lewis of MagnanMetz Gallery in Chelsea selected the July and August calendars with architecture (his field) and landscape in mind. He was especially interested in works which related effectively with the edges of the images and approached, touched or ran over two, three or even four sides. During the selection he noted,
I want to concentrate more on works which push the boundaries.
Here Lewis launches the all-male August calendar with an acrylic, Payton at the Beach by Paul Rybarczyk of Buffalo, NY. He said, “There's depth to it. It’s a beautiful landscape.” His four other Curators’ Choice nominees are: photography, Turbulencia by Tony Lee from Panama; digital photography, I Become You by Michael Seif from Massachusetts; a pastel, Pithy by Gil Conradis from Melbourne, Florida and a charcoal carbon drawing, Blind by Terry Tayler from Wauconda, Illinois. Tayler is making his Barebrush calendar debut.
In addition to Tayler, four other artists are making their calendar debut with August 2011: Carmine Santaniello from Kew Gardens, NY; Gabriel Sanchez from San Juan del Rio, Queretaro, Mexico; Anita Wexler from Sarasota, Florida; and Brian Crede from New York City.
In accordance with the Barebrush program of retiring successful artworks from competition, one artwork in this calendar is being retired, An Artist Friend by Tai Lin. See the paragraph below on Barebrush Provenance to learn more about this program.
August 2011 marks the completion of five years (and 60 monthly calendars) that Barebrush has presented as the N*des-of-the-Month. A total of 1,329 artworks by 260 artists world-wide have gained curatorial recognition and are permanently part of the archives of Barebrush. Barebrush founder and CEO, Ilene Skeen, had this comment:
I began Barebrush as a sort of experiment to see if I could discern any consistent threads in the way diverse curators think about and select art. With the myriad of styles and approaches current in today's art world, I constructed an anthropological model to see for myself if any dominant approaches or preferences emerged.
I am pleased to report that they have. The results are reporting in my blog, Body Language: Art, Biology, Culture.
As year number five draws to a close, Barebrush is thriving. We are working on the next big upgrade which will introduce direct selling by the artists on the Barebrush website. My thanks to all the curators and the artists who together have made Barebrush the place to find excellence in contemporary art.
