Celebration of Art — Claudia Seymour, president of the Salmagundi Club in New York City, selected the art for October with an eye towards the complete message of each artwork. Always mindful of composition, style and finish, this calendar presents some remarkable artistic achievement centered around the nude.

As Ms. Seymour noted in the October call for entries:

....I think the hardest aspect is to present reality and the beauty of the human form without descending into hyper realism or caricature. A portrayal of the nude should have a certain amount of intrinsic grace yet preserve the traditional artistic requirements of value, edge, and tone.

Ms. Seymour begins October with an oil painting, A Mom’s Tattoo by Tai Lin of Linden, NJ. “I’ve seen this before,” she mused, remembering the work from the Barebrush February My N*de Valentine 2011 show at Rogue Space | Chelsea — she personally attended.

She selected Brazil, a pastel by Barebrush Featured Artist, Jean Marcellino of New York, NY, and commented, “A true professional.” Also selected were Kelsey Resting, a color pencil drawing by Tracey Padron of Elgin, Il — “Just beautiful,” she exclaimed the moment she saw it; Sweet Dreams, an acrylic by Buffalo, NY artist Paul Rybarczyk; and Be Alive, a drawing by Taehyub Lee, New York, NY

Two artists are making their calendar debut: David Schulz from Middletown, CT, and Rebecca Venn from Kenosha, WI. Six artworks are retiring: Aftermath by Barebrush Featured Artist Kathy Ostman-Magnusen; Lost in Thought by Tim Brian McSweeney; December Night by Robin Kappy; Internet Dating by Donna Cleary; Niki after 2nd Child by Barebrush Featured Artist Jacqui Morgan; and Sleeping Diane by Barebrush Featured Artist Donelli J. DiMaria. Controversial? Offensive? Why on earth would anyone think so?

The 31 artists represented in October, 2011, in day order are: 1* Tai Lin, 2 Guenter Knop, 3 Matthew Smith, 4 Profile Deleted, 5 Eddie Torres, 6* Jean Marcellino, 7 Victoria Coyle, 8 Angelique Moselle Price, 9 Lynne Levin, 10 Jacqueline Saunders, 11 Peter Wong King, 12 Tony Lee, 13* Tracey Padron, 14 Robin Kappy, 15* Paul Rybarczyk, 16 C. Charles Wang, 17 Gary Paul Stutler, 18 David Schulz, 19 Donelli J. DiMaria, 20* Taehyub Lee, 21 Name Withdrawn, 22 Jacqui Morgan, 23 Kathy Ostman-Magnusen, 24 Christopher Smith, 25 Donna Cleary, 26 Chuck Miller, 27 Sam Martine, 28 Janet A. Cook, 29 Tim Brian McSweeney, 30 Rebecca Venn, 31 Ilene Skeen.

Each of the artists selected for the calendar receives two (2) complimentary listings. Five artists, indicated by asterisks (*), are nominated for the Curators Choice Awards. Curators’ Choice nominees receive 8 additional complimentary listings. The top three artists receive additional prizes. You can also vote for “My Favorite N*de,” the poll which includes all of the art in the calendar. The top three artists in “My Favorite N*de” receive one (1) complementary listing. Winners announced November 1st.

The Barebrush Provenance for each artwork is viewable by clicking on the calendar thumbnail (above) or on the caption under the artwork from each artist’s Barebrush Gallery page. The Barebrush program of retiring artworks which have been selected for three calendars is designed to encourage all artists to show their best new work and keep their online galleries fresh and interesting.
