Celebrate Nudes!—With Barebrush N*des-of-the-Month #64, our artists continue to offer the most delightful, skillful and diverse selection of nudes anywhere. The December 2011 calendar was selected by Barebrush founder and CEO, Ilene Skeen, as the second leg of our conversion to multiple calendars (see also PhotoArt N*des and Best-of-the-Rest). Jury of Awards for the Curators’ Choice Nominees this month is Joyce Pommer, founder and director of Franklin 54 Gallery. Ms. Pommer will be the guest curator (selection and awards) for January 2012.
Ms. Skeen remarked:
I am very pleased and proud how well this calendar turned out. There 28 new nudes here, making their calendar debut, as Barebrush artists continue to submit delightful new work for the competitions and public enjoyment. The three “repeaters” (by Brian Crede, Chanit Roston and Tracey Padron) are also quite special. Soon we will be implementing e-commerce at the Barebrush site and I am hopeful that this will spark even greater interest in our unique competitions of contemporary, hard-working artists.
December opens the holiday calendar in a relaxed and joyful mood with with Curators’ Choice Nominee, Red Nichole, a colored pencil drawing by Rebecca Venn from Kenosha WI. The other four nominees are: ‘From Life’ No.5, a delicate and sensitive watercolor by Vaughn Butland of Kamloops Canada. Bruce Erikson of Maineville OH offers an evocative oil painting of a very young woman, ironically entitled Reflecting on her past. Rounding out the nominees, are the strong drawing, Self-Contained, part of a series by David Schulz of Middletown CT, and Window, a moodly pastel by Tai Lin of Linden NJ, which Lin says is a “mixture of sadness and hope.”
One artist, Tom Morgan of Vancouver, Canada, is making his calendar debut with a lovely oil on panel C-6.
Other artworks of special note in this calendar include a sculpture tour de force, Perfectly Naked Suite (detail) by Christopher Smith of Philadelphia, PA. A. D. Cook of Las Vegas, NV offers Muse, a striking, life-size oil of a beautiful woman in an antique chair, staring with a disconcerting sideways glance and subtle smile at the viewer. Another evocative image with a possible story is Earthmother Mini-Dance by Merrill Brace of Erie, PA. The nude is dancing and a cartoon character with a four-fingered hand is beating a drum. What’s that about? And to close the year on a solid and positive note, we have Pure Gold by John Luce Lockett of Northhampton, England.
