Enjoy Spring Nudes—Guest curator for the March 2012 N*des-of-the-Month was Della Clason Sperling, founder of Sperling Arts New York, specializing in art appraisals and collections management. The calendar benefited from her discerning eye and gentle sense of humor.
Ms. Sperling selected an oil painting, Betty by Jean Marcellino (NY) as Curator’s Choice nominee for the honor of March 1st launching the month. “Excellent,” was Ms. Sperling’s comment. Ms. Sperling selected four other Curator’s Choice nominees. She was taken with the “Simple, almost Japanese ” appearance of Sunshine, an acrylic by Mallory Shannon (FL). Sperling chose a color pencil drawing, Winged Man by Tracey Padron (IL), saying “Incredible. This could go into a Renaissance drawing competition.” When she saw Birth of Cupy, an oil painting by Pacifico Palumbo (MA), she laughed and said, “This is my funny one.” She also enjoyed When I’m 64, an oil painting by David Schulz (CT). “[Nude, and] brush in hand,” she chuckled.
Two artworks are retiring from the competitions, having now been selected for three calendars. They are a bronze sculpture, Siesta by Carmiah Frank (NY, Israel), and an oil painting, Velazquez Pose by Geoffrey Stein (NY).
One artist, Tammy Lockett (MA) is making her calendar debut with a drawing, Foreshortened Figure.
