The Energy of Spring—The April 2012 calendar, selected by guest curator Sharon Way-Howard, widely collected artist, teacher and board member of the Salmagundi Club, displays a lively and dynamic energy while staying true to her original vision.
When asked to provide a personal statement for the art selection, Ms. Way-Howard said:
When choosing art for an exhibition, first I look for evidence of the artist’s method in executing the work, a certain aesthetic quality, followed by excellence in getting the message, thought or feeling across.
Ms. Howard was wowed by Gary Paul Stutler’s painterly oil, Bather, which she chose to start the month. She was excited about Brian Crede’s cut and layered paper, Evan, skillfully showing the planes of the body. Ms. Howard chose the striking Prismacolor© marker image Ethiopian Goddess by Angelique Moselle Price, calling it “very strong,” as her third Curators’ Choice selection. Ms. Way-Howard was impressed with Michael Apice’s expressive drawing, Cindy. Jackie Morgan’s masterful watercolor, Tatiana And....... completed her Curators’ Choice nominations.
Four artworks are retiring this month having been in 3 calendars: Ethiopian Goddess by Angelique Moselle Price, Deep thoughts by Alex Knowlton, Despair by Cynthia Angeles and The light on the dark side of me by Janet A. Cook.
Finally, just because of Easter, Ms. Way-Howard laughed and, referring to the watercolor by Gretchen Mankopf said, “I have to include the bunny slippers!”
