“What I appreciate in any art work is an interesting balanced rhythm of light and dark, a presentation that holds my attention and pleases my eyes and a personal experience unique from the norm.”Mr. Yoder, artist, teacher and Chairman of the Art Committee of the Salmagundi Club carefully and dilligently reviewed all of the art submitted for the calendar. He selected over 100 artworks for the N*des-of-the-Month in his first round through the Barebrush e-lightbox (out of over 800 submitted). Then, with a heavy sigh, he had to eliminate all but the thirty artworks which became the N*des-of-the-Month for June 2012.
Next he selected the five Curators’ Choice nominees. He picked Falling with Phaethon’s Horses, an oil by Janet A. Cook to start the month. “I like the composition, the colors and the Greek mythology,” he said. He selected the unusual ring-shaped oil, Zoetropé by Chanit Roston, saying it was almost Fauvist and reminded him of the Joy of Life by Henri Matisse (1905-1906). He selected Back Portrait an oil and oil pastel by Gary Paul Stutler, calling it “simple and strong.” Mr. Yoder thought that Daniel Maidman's oil, The Shock, had a “nice feel.” He said it was “beautifully painted” and that he liked “the contrast of the geometrics with the body.” He also liked several of the nudes in dappled light by Pacific Palumbo, and was happiest with Tom Under Apple Tree. “I like the light and dark contrast,” he said simply.
Of course, all of the calendar art is still visible in the calendars and in the active artists’ calendar galleries. For Barebrush Featured Artists, retired art appears on the Barebrush Honors Page. Featured Artists with artwork retiring this month are: Curators’ Choice nominee, Chanit Roston with Zoetropé; David Schulz with When I’m 64; and Angelique Moselle Price with Light of Heaven. Barebrush Featured Artists are invited to become “Featured” when their art has appeared in six or more calendars. Their display of interest and dedication to their craft and their history of success at Barebrush is a sign to the art-loving public of contemporary art and artists worthy of recognition.
