Daring and Dark—When guest curator, Ann Aptaker, sat down to select the art for October, she remarked immediately that the quality of the entries was impressive and noticeably higher than her first two times as curator for Barebrush, August 2008 and September 2010. In the call for entries for the October 2012 calendar, she had offered this challange:

I look for fearlessness. That’s not the same thing as recklessness. Recklessness is all risk, empty of vision. Fearlessness starts with vision and then uses the artist’s skill to explore that vision through the thrill of the risk.
Not surprisingly, as Ms. Aptaker went through the artworks, her standards also rose. After a while she remarked, “I am getting very fussy in my old age and I can easily tell the difference between the real deal and those who have skill but have nothing to say.”

When the 31 artworks were choosen, the powerful darks in many of the compositions became evident. Ms. Aptaker selected a dark drawing, N*de St*dy 2011 WB2 by C. Charles Wang of Virginia to launch the month. She noted, “He has a very interesting way of dealing with volume...almost sculptural.” For her other Curators’ Choice nominations, Ms. Aptaker selected an oil, Prophecy by Ione Citrin of Los Angeles; a display of sculptures, Perfectly Naked Suite by Christopher Smith of Philadelphia; an oil, Armspan by Gary Paul Stutler of Vallejo CA; and a drawing, Sad Seated Male by Will Ellis of New York city.

One artist, Elizabeth Rothschild of New York City is making her calendar debut in the Barebrush October 2012 calendar with an acrylic sketch, Man from Midnight Hour Drawathon. Five artworks are making their last calendar appearance, having now been selected for three calendars. Three of them are already mentioned as Curators’ Choice nominees: Sad Seated Male by Will Ellis; Armspan by Gary Paul Stutler and Perfectly Naked Suite by Christopher Smith. Two others, Woman with Roses by Desiree Rose and Four-Hand Composition by Barebrush founder and CEO, Ilene Skeen, are also being retired. The artworks, of course, remain on the Barebrush website as part of the official history of Barebrush.com. The art can also be seen in each of these artist’s calendar gallery.
