Ideals—Guest curator for the November 2012 calendars, David Masello, writes about art and culture for the New York Times, Town & Country (where he was senior editor), Fine Art Connoisseur, American Arts Quarterly, and many other periodicals. He is delivering another lecture this spring at the 92nd Street Y (Tribeca) on public artworks in New York. In his personal statement to Barebrush in advance of the curatorial process, Mr. Masello summarized his plan this way:
What I'm seeking this month are works that people would want to look at and, ideally, own. To launch the month he selected a sculpture, Torso Finial 1 by Christopher Smith of Philadelphia, PA.
His other choices were an oil he called “slightly erotic” with two male nudes, What’s Going On Here, by Pacifico Palumbo of Colrain, MA. He thought The Separation, an acrylic by Ione Citrin of Los Angeles, CA, an unusual and interesting concept. He also liked an ink drawing, K5 by Janet A. Cook of New York, NY, for its beauty, technique and skill. Mr. Masello selected Reflections an oil by David Schulz of Middletown, CT, also because of its obvious skill and sensual qualities.
Six artists have work in this calendar which has now been selected for three calendars by three curators. The artworks are therefore considered validated and no longer eligible for competitions. We congratuate the artists and their work here: In To The Light by Terry Hinkle from St. Louis, MO; Blue Mood by Cynthia Angeles from Washington, DC; Bather by Gary Paul Stutler from Vallejo, CA; Ryan Being Relaxed by Ilene Skeen from New York, NY; and Within these Walls (The White Room Series II) by Victoria Coyle from South Wales, United Kingdom.
