Short Month Sensationals -- Vaughan Lewis is a gallerist and preparator at MaganMetz Gallery, as well as participating in private curatorial projects. MagnanMetz Gallery is co-owned and directed by Alberto Magnan and Dara Metz. The gallery exhibits international cutting-edge, emerging and established artists working in a broad range of media. Magnan and Metz work closely with their artists to develop and promote their careers and support complex and unique projects in both the private and public sphere.
Mr. Lewis selected the five Curators' Choice nominees for February, starting the month with an intriguing and lively oil, Checker Dancers by Gary Paul Stutler of Vallejo, CA. He selected a sensitive, well-composed graphite drawing, Reposed by Peter King of Cochiti Lake, NM; a sepia conte drawing, showing a great feeling for form and emotion, Gloria holding her knee by Lue Isaac of Seattle, WA; an impressive watercolor portrait, Man With Head In Hand by Emily Stedman of New York, NY; and the emotive oil, Study of Man #3 by David Schulz of Middletown, CT.
One artist, Mark Lightfoot from Oakland, CA is making his Barebrush calendar debut with Asleep, unusual and worthy in both point of view and medium: a head-down figure in acrylic with oil overpainting on rag paper on plywood support.
Artworks making their calendar debut: 18. Four artworks are being retired, having now appeared in three calendars: Study of Man #3 by David Schulz from Middletown, CT; Checker Dancers by Gary Paul Stutler from Vallejo, CA; Sweet Dreams by Paul Rybarczyk from Buffalo, NY; Woman on the Rocks by Bruce Erikson from Maineville, OH.
