About the February 2017 Calendar

"Golden Torso" by Robert Markey
Black History Month Observed -- Guest curator, Vaughn Lewis, is an independent curator with a long history at Barebrush. For this month, Mr. Lewis wrote:

For the February calendar, and in recognition of Black History month, I was in search of works which captured Black aesthetics, as an atmosphere, a feeling, tone, and body.

Each time I’m asked to curate, I always look forward to revisiting each artist’s work over the years, as well as becoming familiar with new members added to the Barebrush family. In some ways the strong work viewed this year during the selection process made my job bittersweet; SO many strong works to choose from, but I was limited to only 28 for each calendar. However, in the end, I think you’ll find all three calendars delightful treats.

Mr. Lewis selected five Curators’ Choice nominees for February, (starred dates in the list): 1* standard of beauty (drawing) by Taehyub Lee of manhattan, NY; 7* Golden Torso (sculpture) by Robert Markey of Ashfield, MA; 10* back view (charcoal/carbon) by Mateus Costa of Cheltenham, PA; 22* Leaning Man (charcoal) by Jean Marcellino of New York, NY; 24* N*de St*dy 2009 D (Charcoal) by C. Charles Wang of VA.

Five artists, indicated by asterisks (*), are nominated for the Curators’ Choice Awards. Barebrush curators (past and present) vote on the Curators’ Choice nominees. The top two artists receive additional prizes. Selection limits and prizes are determined dynamically based on the number of entries. See the call page for more information.

Winning art is historic and is viewable in the calendar archives (dating from 2006). Winning art becomes a permanent part of the history of Barebrush.com. In addition, each artwork's detail page show the date and curator of each calendar win as part of its Barebrush Provenance. The Barebrush program of retiring artworks which have been selected for three calendars is designed to encourage all artists to show their best new work and keep their online galleries fresh and interesting.
