Ideals of the Mixed Exhibition—Art writer and editor, David Masello, selected the Best of the Rest November 2012 calendar happily, even joyfully. He said, “For some reason, this calendar selection feels much more casual.” He agreed that maybe freed of the emotional charge of nudes, the all other genres calendar is just pure fun. “I love the mixed exhibition,” he stated, “I love walking into a gallery with a mixed exhibition on the wall.” Mr. Masello was quite taken with Temporal Expression by Elizabeth Sowell-Zak of Lincroft, NJ, and chose that sequential oil series of portraits to launch the month of November.

He chose abstract oil, Early Summer by Roger Cummiskey of Malaga, Spain, saying “That’ll wake people up!”. He liked the composition and the visual ambiguity of Face off by Alex Knowlton of New York, NY. Another early selection was John the Artist, an oil by Jean Marcellino also of New York, NY. In Profile, a cat portrait by Peter King Cochiti Lake, NM, was also selected almost immediately: “What is this doing here?” he asked.

“Animals are one of the genres,” answered Ilene Skeen, founder and CEO of Barebrush. Mr. Masello selected an oil painting, Curle by Pacifico Palumbo of Colrain, MA, perhaps to balance the cat with a dog. He found Wonderful Moments with Alexis by Jacqueline Saunders of Burke, VA, well done fun. He also found acrylic, Si Se Puede, No Se Pudo! by Guadalupe Herrera of Houston, TX interesting.

Seven artworks are retiring with this calendar, having now appeared in three calendars. Clicking on the calendar thumbnail will show the larger image and the full Barebrush provenance. The art is no longer eligible for competitions, but will remain on the Barebrush website as a permanent part of the history of Barebrush. We congratulate the artists and their work here: Sybil by David Schulz from Middletown, CT; Three Graces by Donelli J. DiMaria from Santa Fe, NM; Man in Gray by Taehyub Lee from New York, NY; Aunt Lola’s Engagement by Pacifico Palumbo from Colrain, MA; Mary Ann by Malcolm McCoull from Perth, Australia; Reclining Robertby Jean Marcellino from New York, NY; and Indecision by Cynthia Angeles from Washington, DC.
