Facing Forward —For selection of the Best-of-the-Rest calendar, artist and curator, D. S. Wade, gleefully chose Red Hot by Rebecca Venn of Kenosha, WI. She admired a drawing, Susan and Her Hat, by Jean Marcellino of New York City, calling it, “Very strong.” She also liked the watercolor heads series by Jacqueline Saunders of Burke, VA, choosing four of them showing a total of thirty heads in delightful variety. Booger Boy, a drawing by Justin Austin of Graham, NC, got a laugh and a hesitation followed by, “Well, I am going to include it!” Ms. Wade liked the unfinished freshness of Line Man by Commack, NY artist, Sam Martine. She also noted the effective repetition of the yellow of his vest in the yellow of the background. She selected Rejoice and Twins, both by Santa Fe, NM artist, Donelli DiMaria, admiring the composition and expert color and values. And ending the year on a happy note, we see Get Down Penguins! by Hannah Davis of Brooklyn, NY.
Fully ten of the entries here are retiring having now been selected for three Barebrush calendars. Among them are the two by Donelli DiMaria, Rejoice and Twins, Booger Boy, by Justin Austin, and Get Down Penguins!, by Hannah Davis. In addition, four watercolors by New York artist, Jacqui Morgan are also being retired. These are: Water Market Thailand, Hollywood Still in Indigo, Mimi Vang Olsen with her Daughters, and Eternal vs Fleeting. Rounding out the ten are the strong, dark pastel, Shoulder by Tai Lin of Linden, NJ and John by Taehyub Lee of New York City.
Darlene Kuhne of Arvada, CO makes her calendar debut this month with a flowing ink wash drawing, Breaktime. Since there are too many comments to include here, working from notes, Barebrush CEO will email them individually to the artists wherever possible. Overall, the impression of this calendar seems to be the singular expression of Ms. Wade’s lively and fearless personality enjoying art and sharing her enjoyment with the world.
