PhotoArt Fantasies—Wind, sun, water and life create a dynamic action showcase for the December 2011 PhotoArt N*des. Here Barebrush photographers display many sensibilites and fantasies of the nude in contemporary photography. The calendar was selected by Barebrush founder and CEO, Ilene Skeen. Joyce Pommer, founder and director of Franklin 54 Gallery will be the guest curator (selection and awards) for January 2012.

Ms. Skeen had this to say about the camera and the nude art calendar competitions:

Since the very beginning of the Barebrush calendar contest in 2006, one of my concerns has been about the wisdom of showing photography and “hand-made” art together. Although excellence in any medium requires tremendous skill, the skills required for photography and “hand-made” art are radically different.

In 2011, the number of entries increased and the pressures of the different skill-sets began to overwhelm the selection process. Then the question became more about the necessity of separating the media, so photography would have its own special showcase. I agonized over this and asked many people: painters, photographers and art lovers. The reaction universally, almost without hesitation was “Yes, do it! Separate them.” Finally, beginning in November 2011, we did, launching the first-ever PhotoArt N*des calendar.

With this December calendar, I continue to be impressed at the outstanding quality, variety and sensibility of the art. I and am hoping that we continue to see still more photography to sustain and grow this excellent new calendar and help it thrive.

The month begins with El Hombre del Viento by Tony Lee of Panama, perhaps evoking the Bob Dylan song in an unexpected way. Two delightful photographs, also by Lee should send every non-Spanish speaking viewer to Google™ Translate for a treat. Next comes Angelique Moselle Price of Nashville, TN with two photos, the first reminding us of Lisbeth Salander from the Millenium Trilogy (Stieg Larsson) and the second quite a captivating Betty Boop. German expat, Guenter Knop from New York City, shows three classic nudes arranged on the calendar in a triangle (days 6, 8 female and 14, an artfully dancing couple).

Two other long-time Barebrush photographers Joe Mays of Kentucky and Dan McCormack of upstate NY are also well represented. Mays shows his trademark bodies in colored light effects (days 9, 10, 11 and 12). McCormack is known for his unusual pinhole photography works (days 23 and 24). From Peter King, from Cochiti Lake, NM we see four, three solo females (days 13, 15 and 16) and a lively foursome (actually a solo woman, day 7) entitled Mirror Image. Matthew Smith, also a New York City photographer, is shows beautifully composed images of women, smoke and wind (days 17, 18 and 19), while T.F. McDonald gets up close and personal with bodies as abstract shapes (days 20 and 22). Corrie Ancone of Sydney Australia, gives us Lucious Scent an enticing blue nude cheesecake shot, the sensibility of which is anything but cheesecake. Other PhotoArt N*des new to the calendars include two male nudes (days 25 and 26) by Gabriel Sanchez of San Juan del Rio, Queretaro, Mexico, two male nudes by New York artist and photographer William Thierfelder (days 27 and 29) and a bevy of floaters from Michael Seif of Boston, MA (day 28).

Finally, Janet E. Gorman offers Seduction, a darkly lit female torso with a pink scarf (day 30) and Speak To Me a very pregnant, stylized negative shot, perfect for New Year’s Eve.

The 31 artists represented in December, 2011, in day order are: 1 Tony Lee, 2 Tony Lee, 3 Tony Lee, 4 Anonymous, 5 Anonymous, 6 Guenter Knop, 7 Peter Wong King, 8 Guenter Knop, 9 Joseph Mays, 10 Joseph Mays, 11 Joseph Mays, 12 Joseph Mays, 13 Peter Wong King, 14 Guenter Knop, 15 Peter Wong King, 16 Peter Wong King, 17 Matthew Smith, 18 Matthew Smith, 19 Matthew Smith, 20 BlindWolf Photography, T.
